Large crowds expected, police upping patrols as Pitt plays in ACC Championship

PITTSBURGH — Pitt football is on the minds of many ahead of Saturday’s prime time ACC Football Championship against Wake Forest.

“I think we’re all just really excited to see what’s gonna happen,” said Zoe Maze, a University of Pittsburgh sophomore.

The game may be in Charlotte, but the watch and house parties are set on the South Side and in many Oakland neighborhoods.

“Probably staying around the Southside. Maybe hit the North Shore afterwards. You know, hopefully see some victory lights in Oakland,” said Liam McCafferty, a Pitt graduate.

Pittsburgh Public Safety is aware of the potential high volume of crowds and is working to make sure everyone stays out of harm’s way.

They’ve added staff and are collaborating with Pittsburgh Police, Pitt Police and the state police’s mounted unit.

Public Safety says they plan to set up light towers in busy areas and that you can expect to see officers on bikes and motorcycles.

In addition, they are reminding Pitt students and neighbors in Oakland to remove couches and recliners from porches and lawns or run the risk of paying hundreds of dollars in fines.

“OK, first of all we are playing Wake Forest. Not exactly a break furniture type of team to be breaking furniture about. Save it for the bowl game. My biggest message is keep drinking water,” said Cade George, a Pitt senior.

Focused on football, Pitt alum Liam McCafferty says he feels optimistic and hopes everyone celebrates responsibly.

“Just have a good time and like I said, hopefully nothing too crazy goes down, but hope to see a lot of Pitt gear.”

The City of Pittsburgh Fire and EMS will also have additional staff ready to go.

The highly anticipated Pitt game is set for 8 p.m. Saturday.
