Activity returns to Mellon Park after shooting of youth football coach

PITTSBURGH — It's been less than 24 hours since a youth football coach was shot in front of his players during practice at Mellon Park, but the bustle of activity has resumed.

Friday night, police said a man arrived at practice looking for the coach, then after a brief altercation fired several shots.

All the while, children between the ages of 7 and 10 practiced nearby and their parents watched from the sidelines.

"That's sad. If you have a problem with someone, don't bring that around people's children or anybody's child, that's wrong," Brittney Lane of Wilkinsburg said.

On top of this, the park was full with many other visitors enjoying the sunset and nice weather.

Saturday morning was business as usual at the park for many people.

"I still feel safe here. I'm not going to not bring my son to his games and stuff because of what people decide to do," Lane told Channel 11.

Police said this wasn't a random shooting, and while the coach recovers they are continuing to search for the gunman.
