Neighbors help 7-month-old whose mother was shot, killed while holding her

PITTSBURGH — We are getting our first look at a 7-month-old girl who was in her mother's arms when her mother was shot and killed on a city street.

The Perry South community was outraged and horrified that someone would shoot a young mother as she held her baby in her arms.

They tell Channel 11 that they had to do something, so while police try to bring the killer to justice, the community has started a scholarship fund for baby Nia.

"The gunman stole one life and one future. We're not gonna let them take the baby's future," said Mark Fatla with the North Side Leadership Conference.

Channel 11 went back to North Charles Street, back to the spot where Nicole Dailey, 26, was gunned down as she held her 7-month-old daughter, Nia, last Monday.

It was an act of violence that shook the North Side community to its core.

"After we expressed our condolences and desire to help somehow, they had asked us and preferred that we set up a scholarship fund for the baby, her 7-month-old daughter," said Angela Williams with the North Side Leadership Conference.

Dailey was a single mom who friends and neighbors say was loved by all.

Dailey's pastor told Channel 11 she can't fathom who would want to kill this young woman so violently and leave her baby without a mother.

Pittsburgh police say homicide detectives are actively working this case, but they've released no information about suspects or persons of interest.

While Dailey's loved ones wait for an arrest, they hope starting a scholarship fund for her baby honors her memory.
