Nurses across Pa. speak out against lack of protection from COVID-19

Hospital staff across the state said it's like playing Russian roulette. They're going to work every day and putting their lives on the line.

Nurses spoke out Wednesday in a show of solidarity. They told Channel 11's Rick Earle some are working without the proper protection.

“We're desperate and we are bring told it's coming, but it’s not,” said Maureen May, president of the Pennsylvania Association of Nurses and Professionals. “Every day we wait and wait and wait.”

One by one, the nurses from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh shared their stories about reusing masks, gloves and gowns for several days.

“We're using the same mask all day in and out of every single patient’s room no matter what the diagnosis is,” said Amy Mundy, a nurse.

UPMC officials have said they are rationing supplies but have enough on hand.

And even the state secretary of health on Tuesday agreed, saying across the state 40% of all ICU beds and 70% of ventilators are still available.
