ALLEGHENY CO., Pa. — Allegheny County Housing Authority (ACHA) officials plan to demolish and redevelop a public housing complex that was built in the World War II era.
Hawkins Village, which includes nearly 200 units in Rankin, will be demolished and redeveloped if the county can secure the funds to do so.

According to officials, current residents will have the choice of going to another public housing plan or a voucher for another unit. If funding gets approved, families could start relocating later this year, with construction starting in 2021.
The new complex would have about 110 units, more green space and a new community center. ACHA officials said it is time to rebuild the community by creating updated units with more space.
“Some of these buildings have holes in them and mice are coming through them,” said resident Aliya Williams. “The cabinets are falling to pieces.”
Williams has lived there for about six years. She is happy it’s being redeveloped but feels like she and many others are being left in the dark about the actual plan.
Officials said they met with the Hawkins Village Residence Committee and that they’re optimistic about the project.
