Pitt, CMU release annual crime reports

PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University on Wednesday released their annual crime statistics that include the number of sexual assaults on their respective campuses.

Both schools reported higher numbers than other colleges in our area, but they are also the largest universities.

Channel 11 found out that students want to know that information and know that their school is being proactive to prevent and deter this kind of behavior.

“I don’t feel like there is a lot of transparency in the administration and I feel like that’s something a lot of students are crying out for and I don’t know if those voices are really being heard,” said Lauren Fabrizio, a senior at Pitt.

Channel 11 went through the reports and found that the number of reported rapes and instances of dating violence decreased and the number of stalking incidents stayed the same at Pitt.

At CMU, the number of reported rapes went down but the instances of dating violence and stalking went up significantly.

In the last two months, 60 county-owned surveillance cameras were installed in Oakland to help deter sexual assaults in off campus neighborhoods that often see higher instances of crime.

Just last week at Duquesne University, a female student reported being sexually assaulted in her residence hall. Earlier this month, another student there said she was assaulted in an off-campus apartment.

Both incidents are still under investigation by Pittsburgh police. All the schools have instituted new programs and say they’ve put more resources behind educating students and helping victims of sexual assault.
