Both the officer and the pickup truck driver were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be freed by first responders.

The Jefferson Hills Police Department announced over the weekend that Officer Provins died “due to extensive injuries” from that accident.

Provins was a 15-year veteran of the police department, and the chief of police issued a statement following his death:

“The Jefferson Hills Police Department mourns the loss of Officer Provins. Dale’s colleagues in the Department and in the Borough admired him, his sense of humor and kindness. Losing one of our own is extremely difficult. Our condolences go out to Dale’s family and friends; we share in their grief.”

Investigators believe that Provins was traveling northbound on Old Clairton Road and the pickup truck was traveling southbound when the two collided head-on on the northbound side of the road.
