U.S. Steel fined $743K for air pollution control, permit violations

PITTSBURGH — U.S. Steel has been fined by the Allegheny County Health Department for air pollution control and permit violations at the Clairton Coke Works.

The violations happened at the Clairton Coke Works during the second and third quarters of 2019, officials said.

Stipulated penalties of $743,625 have been placed against U.S. Steel, officials said. Ninety percent will be paid to the Community Benefit Trust for impacted communities, and the remaining 10 percent will be paid to the Clean Air Fund. The money will help the communities of Clairton, Glassport, Liberty, Lincoln and Port Vue.

“The stipulated penalties were calculated pursuant to the department’s agreement that was reached with U.S. Steel in June of 2019,” a news release said. (CLICK HERE to read the agreement.)
