Toy Gun Warning Issued In Advance Of Halloween

None — Police are warning consumers to stay alert this Halloween for toy gun costume accessories that look real.

Channel 11's Jennifer Abney has advice for parents buying costumes and for those opening their home to trick-or-treaters.

Gun expert George Welch said the advances in toy guns over the years are vast.

"The realism is a lot better than when I was a kid," Welch said. "We had little plastic guns that were blue or yellow. Now they have actual weapon systems that look like real weapon systems."

In one case last year, a teen was shot and killed by someone who thought he was carrying a real gun.

A teen had a toy gun, but the shooter said he thought the gun was real and acted in self defense.

Law enforcement officials are working to prevent that from happening again by warning people to be careful with the toy guns this time of year.

Officers suggest looking for guns that have bright colors or any feature that distinguishes them as fake.
