North Carolina mother accidentally shot, killed after child finds gun in purse, police say

CORNELIUS, N.C. — A North Carolina mother was killed when one of her children discovered a gun, which discharged, striking the woman and another child, authorities said.

According to WSOC-TV, the incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Monday at an apartment on Meridian Street in Cornelius. Gabriel Alexis Henderson, 25, was in a bedroom with four of her five children when one child found a semi-automatic handgun in her purse, Cornelius police said. The gun then fired, killing Henderson and injuring one of the children, authorities said.

Henderson was pronounced dead at the scene, Cornelius police said in a news release. The injured child, who was rushed to a nearby hospital, is expected to recover, WSOC reported.
