SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — A woman was rescued Thursday after she drove off a cliff in California when a stranger mistakenly opened her car door, investigators said.
Santa Cruz police said the woman was sitting in her car in the parking lot at the Santa Cruz Walton Lighthouse when she was surprised by a man who opened her passenger door, causing her to drive off the cliff, KRON reported.

She suffered injuries to her foot but was otherwise OK.
Police said it “truly” was an accident and an “honest mistake,” KTVU reported.
The man thought he was opening the passenger door to his wife’s car, which is a similar make, model and color, KTVU reported. The similar looking cars were parked next to each other and the man, who does not see well at night, mistakenly opened the wrong door.
Investigators did not release the identities of those involved.
