Trouble At Carrick High School Causes Panic

PITTSBURGH,None — Trouble at Carrick High School triggered panic among students and parents Tuesday afternoon.

It all began with a fight Monday and threats of retaliation, which sent police to the school.

Several students were involved in an altercation at the school on Monday. According to Pittsburgh Public Schools spokesperson Ebony Pugh, the students were removed from the building and face disciplinary actions and charges through the juvenile court system.

"It's just scary, you know. A lot of people getting killed all over the place," said parent Javier Sanabria.

Sanabria is talking about shootings citywide. The new threats at Carrick High School have left him and his daughter frightened.

"As soon as I found out, I was scared. I texted my dad, telling him that something was going to happen. He was like, ‘Oh, I am going to come and get you,'" said Mariah Sanabria.

The streets around Carrick were crawling with police and K-9 teams following the incident.

The following message regarding the incident was sent to the homes of all Pittsburgh Carrick families using the district's parent notification system Alert Now:

"Hello, this is Carrick High School calling regarding recent events at the school. Yesterday, March 15, eight students were involved in a brief altercation that lasted approximately 3 minutes. All students were immediately removed from the building and face harsh disciplinary action and criminal charges. In addition, students have lost student activity privileges including attending prom and graduation.

"Today, rumors were generated via cell phones throughout the student body that were unsubstantiated and not true. These incidents created unnecessary disruption to the school because student safety was never in question.

"Please note: If any student chooses to participate in fighting, they too will subject to suspension, charges, and loss of student activity privileges. In addition, use of cell phones during the school day violates the student code of conduct. Students need to be in school tomorrow and ready to learn."

Five years ago, a 16-year-old was shot and killed near Carrick High School.

Keith Watts was gunned down in a drive-by shooting. Another teenager was hurt in the incident.

Three people were convicted of murder in the case.
