SEWARD, Pa.,None — High winds toppled a circus tent in Westmoreland County, injuring 10 people including three children.
More than 10 people were hurt, including an adult who was struck in the head, after the Lewis and Clark Circus tent collapsed during a brief storm Thursday in Seward.
The injured adult was taken to a local hospital and is in the intensive care unit, officials said. Three others were taken by ambulance to the hospital. Neither victim's name or condition has been released.
The other victims' injuries did not appear to be as severe, officials said.
About 50 people were in the tent when the collapse happened, officials said.
Seward Volunteer Fire Company Chief Travis Lovejoy said spectators fled from the toppled tent partway through the first of two scheduled shows. Three people were taken from the scene in ambulances.
"You could see the wind was starting to pick up, and there was a pole over by the one bleachers that we watched lift up a couple times," said spectator Rebecca Baird.
"I got stuck under the tent, and it was just, like, it happened so quick," said spectator Haley Baird.
Circus officials told Channel 11 News the tent was designed to withstand winds up to at least 60 mph.
The National Weather Service said the wind gust that took the tent down could have been between 60 and 70 mph.
The circus owner said despite the accident, the show will go on later Friday in Cambria County.
