NFL Combine session dedicated to Ryan Shazier

Indianapolis, IN — Ryan Shazier’s recovery from injury was top of mind at the NFL Combine on Sunday, thanks to a Steelers scout.

Mark Gorscak, addressing the college linebackers at the combine, told them on NFL Network: “We want to dedicate this group because you’re the linebackers to Ryan Shazier… everything we do, we want to remember Ryan because Ryan blew this combine up and he was an umber one draft pick and he’s an outstanding football player in our league.”

Shazier is recovering from a spinal injury suffered in a game against Cincinnati last December.  Since then he has been shown standing and is said to be working on walking in his rehabilitation.

Gorscak went on to tell the young linebackers, “One thing I know about Ryan Shazier, I ain’t betting against him of coming back, and he’s making great progress right now. So let’s remember his spirit and we’re gonna get a lot of things done today in this group.”

Shazier himself also talked with NFL Network in a phone interview about his recovery.  Shazier said his goals have not changed.  He intends to play football again, and to make it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  “You know, every day I try to get better, I strive for the Hall of Fame and I was doing that this season the whole time I was playing,” said Shazier.  “I still do that while I’m doing rehab so I know it’s still a possibility. I have the Lord, he has my back and I constantly feel like I’m going to come back and play football.”

Shazier was grateful that Sunday’s combine session was dedicated to him.   He went on to talk about the one time where he asked, “Why me?”.  Shazier said, “When it first happened, I was like dang, this is a tough situation, why do I have to go through this? Everybody knows that injury is a part of football but it just threw me off but honestly, once I said that I just talked to the Lord, I knew that he had something for me and he wanted me to help him lead more people to God in the calling he has me doing right now and I’m just going to continue to get better.”

Shazier won’t play in 2018, but is continuing to work toward a comeback.
