Penguins lose to Rangers in Game 2 of playoffs

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins lost to the New York Rangers Saturday afternoon in Game 2 of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Pens lost by a score of 4-2. The series is now tied at a game apiece for each team.

The Pens seemingly got a boost before the game when injured star Evgeni Malkin returned to the lineup after being sidelined with an army injury. Bryan Rust also returned to the lineup after sitting out with a lower-body injury.

The teams played to a scoreless tie after the first period, but the second period included a bevy of goals.

The Penguins got on the board first with a power play goal scored by Phil Kessel, but what followed quickly put the team out of the game.

The Rangers rattled off three straight goals by Keith Yandle, Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello. The second period ended with the Pens down 3-1.

The third period didn’t get much better as Chris Kreider scored a goal in the early minutes of the period for the Rangers. The Pens answered with another goal by Kessel, cutting the deficit to 4-2, but the team couldn’t quite catch up.

The Pens will be in action next on Tuesday night when they travel to New York City to take on the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The game starts at 7 p.m.
