Hazy skies, filtered sunshine in Pittsburgh area caused by wildfire smoke plumes from Canada

PITTSBURGH — Notice the hazy skies and filtered sunshine today?

These weren’t clouds, they were wildfire smoke plumes from ongoing fires in Alberta, Canada.

The jet stream blew the smoke plumes southeastward and we’re seeing them over western Pennsylvania today.

In fact, the sun was blocked just enough to keep our high temperature a few degrees cooler than expected.

As winds aloft slightly shift direction, the thickest plumes will drift east tonight, but not before leaving us with a potentially nice sunset this evening.

The plumes won’t be nearly as visible tomorrow especially with some high clouds drifting overhead.

With how thin and high the smoke is, there is no concern for air quality in the Pittsburgh area.
