Pittsburgh committee tasked with helping curb teen violence named

PITTSBURGH — Members of a new committee tasked with curbing youth violence in the city have been named.

The nine-member Advisory Committee for Youth and Family Resource Centers committee was selected by Pittsburgh Mayor Gainey and Council President Theresa Kail-Smith.

The committee will use existing assets to launch resource centers meant to serve as a safe place for youth while providing support for families in need, according to a news release.

The committee members are Councilman Rev. Ricky Burgess, Councilman Anthony Coghill, Councilman R. Daniel Lavelle, Ricky Moody, Diane Holder, Lisa Frank, Kathryn Vargas, David Jones and an education coordinator to be named.

City and school leaders have been discussing ways to curb teen violence in the wake of several shootings, including a funeral shooting in October in which two teens are accused of injuring six people. Just last week, four students were shot outside Westinghouse, and a 14-year-old is accused of shooting and killing a 17-year-old in Carrick earlier this month.
