4 people arrested after 6-hour standoff in Butler

BUTLER, Pa. — Three people were arrested early Monday when a police standoff that lasted six hours ended in Butler County.

Police were called shortly before 10 p.m. to a report of a burglary in progress at a duplex on Franklin Street in Butler.

"I was up in bed and I heard all this commotion, and it started scaring me,” said Betty Ernst, who lives in the other half of the duplex.

The standoff ended at about 4 a.m. when police arrested three people inside the home and another person who they said was hiding in the bushes.

Ernst's apartment was damaged during the standoff. She showed Channel 11's Steven Fisher broken windows and holes in the wall where police had fired tear gas.

"You ought to see my house upstairs, it looks like a storm went through it,” Ernst said.

Police said all four people taken into custody will face charges and are being held at the Butler County jail. Their names have yet to be released.
