5 Businesses Without AC Because Of Copper Thefts In Scott Township

SCOTT TOWNSHIP, Pa.,None — Five businesses are without air conditioning because of copper thefts in Scott Township. Police said the thefts happened at an industrial park on Sunday night.

Since then, building D in the United Industrial Park has been without air conditioning in the summer heat. Investigators said the thieves stole hundreds of feet of electrical cable, which knocked out the air conditioning unit.

"They actually cut the conduit. It's been patched in now and closed up on both sides and that's where they pulled the conductors out," said property manager Jim Malanos.

Police said the thieves scaled 30 feet of conduit to get to the roof where they cut away 420 feet of live load cable.

Duquesne Light spokesman Joey Vallarian said cutting live cable is extremely dangerous.

"It was a live service that was cut. It's just not a smart thing to do," Vallarian said.

Vallarian said Duquesne Light is putting together security measures to protect businesses and, more importantly, save lives.

Officials at Duquesne Light said would-be thieves from across the country have been electrocuted from attempting to cut live cable.
