After a new checkpoint was built near Beijing, incredible gridlock clogged up one of the country's busiest and widest highways.
The jam spanned about 50 lanes of traffic approaching the checkpoint after which it was supposed to funnel into six lanes.
That made for a quick bottleneck that backed up travelers for hours.
Motorists had little choice but to top off gas tanks or go for a stroll while the waited.
Heavy congestion was reported at all major cities.
