North Allegheny school leaders looking for solution to keep kids, drivers safe on the bus

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Driving past McKnight Elementary School, it is hard to miss the large sign out front that says bus drivers are needed. North Allegheny is another district weighing its options for back to school.

The North Allegheny School District Acting Superintendent Patrick O’Toole told Channel 11 the district will have to change how students get on and off the bus. He said they will have to figure out how to maintain social distancing on the bus and that the district may need additional vehicles and drivers this year.

“Transportation in a large suburban district like this is huge and we have to think also about the safety of our children but also the health and safety of our drivers,” O’Toole said. “Having enough drivers was challenging enough under regular circumstances but we are now having a challenge in making sure we have enough drivers for the coming year.”

Several bus companies in the area said they have not seen any increase demand yet.
