Pittsburgh Public Schools’ board votes to allow fall sports and renew contract for superintendent

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Public Schools’ board has voted unanimously to allow fall sports.

Several board members said public input from students, coaches and parents swayed their decision. It was made very clear playing is voluntary and students and coaches can opt out.

This comes weeks after the board voted for virtual learning for all students for the first nine weeks of class.

School board members said athletes and coaches swayed them, and they want students to have the same opportunities as those in the suburbs.

“We have to provide the opportunity and give our kids hope,” said board member William Gallagher.

Some parents told Channel 11 that no school in-person should also mean no sports, but the board stood by its decision. Officials said teams will follow state and county guidance of no more than 250 people outside, meaning the band and cheerleaders will be in the stands -- not out on the field.

The board voted also voted 7-2 on Wednesday to renew the contract for Superintendent Dr. Anthony Hamlet.

Hamlet’s time with PPS has been met with some controversy, such as questions over his resume, administrative staff turnover and an investigation into whether a district-funded trip to Cuba was necessary.
