PPS continuing grab-and-go meal program for students despite virtual learning

PITTSBURGH — For thousands of students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, in-person learning is not only critical for education, but also provides guaranteed meals.

The district provides free and reduced breakfast and lunch in cafeterias during the school year.

This year, students will do virtual learning for at least the first nine weeks, and in some cases, that could take them away from the food and nutrition they need.

When the coronavirus pandemic forced everyone home in March, the district started a grab-and-go program so students could still receive breakfast and lunch.

Superintendent Anthony Hamlet said that model will continue going forward. Students will still get those meals – whether they are learning in front of a computer or in the classroom.

“We still plan to give out food for our students, breakfast and lunch. Also, multiple meals so they won’t have to come back and forth every day,” Hamlet said. “It shows the support and the love we have for our students, faculty, staff, and the community as well. We want to be highly visible, highly supportive and highly collaborative with the community.”
