PITTSBURGH — ELYSIS, the joint venture tech company created by Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Corp. and Rio Tinto, will supply its aluminum for the wheels of Audi’s first electric sports car – the e-tron GT, according to a news release.

ELYSIS uses a process, invented by Alcoa, that eliminates all direct carbon dioxide emissions from the traditional smelting process, making the aluminum more sustainable. The only byproduct of the process is pure oxygen.

“Alcoa’s DNA is built on discovering the process that made aluminum a part of our everyday lives, and we’re proud to help the industry take another step forward to lower the carbon footprint of global supply chains,” Tim Reyes, Alcoa’s chief commercial officer and executive vice president, said in a prepared statement.
