PITTSBURGH — At the end of 2020′s regular NFL season, the league just barely broke 1.1 million fans attending games, less than a tenth of the number that attended games in the prior year.

Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field saw an average of under 2,000 people for each game it hosted in 2020, a drastic decline from year’s prior. In 2019, the stadium averaged more than 62,000 attendees across its eight home games for a total of more than 497,000 fans, according to figures from ESPN.

Heinz Field saw only 3% of the prior year’s overall home game attendance with a total of 15,877 people attending one of the eight home games the city hosted in 2020. The team didn’t allow fans to attend for several of the season’s games amid on-going fluctuations of the local spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
