PITTSBURGH — As he works through the big decisions involving his family’s 100-year-old business, Jim Nied’s memories spill out like an open tap of Iron City beer, with a lifetime of relationships from his Nied’s Hotel sudsing up as he keeps talking.
After he initially closed the bar business at the end of last year, Nied has formally listed the Nied’s Hotel property for sale, including two neighboring houses and an open lot next door that has served as the Nied’s Hotel amphitheater for the bar’s long-popular concerts.
Yet even amid making such major decisions, Nied, who lives above the bar, describes himself as in a “state of flux” as he has considered potential short-term ventures as well as the ongoing consideration to reopen the bar as the property is marketed for sale.
