PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh gym chain Mecka Fitness announced it is terminating its relationship from the CrossFit brand after CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman made an insensitive comment on Twitter about the pandemic and George Floyd this weekend.
Mecka Fitness said that the company will not be renewing its affiliate agreement for its CrossFit Mt. Lebanon or at 5 Borders CrossFit in the Strip District as a result of Glassman's comments. CrossFit-type classes will remain, however.
“We can change the name and it doesn’t take away the intensity, fun and benefits of the workout,” Mecka Fitness said in a statement. "Changing the class name will never take away the feeling of belonging and gratification that we come back for everyday. But a name is important and a brand is important and we have decided that we don’t want to be associated with a brand that has different core values than ours.
