PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh may have outlined the potential for nearly 8 million square feet of new development on its Oakland campus in its newly proposed institutional master plan now before the Pittsburgh Planning Commission, but that doesn’t mean a building boom is immediately on the way, either.
Owen Cooks, assistant vice chancellor of planning design and construction at the University of Pittsburgh, was quick to manage expectations of what’s to come in presenting the first of two briefings before the commission on the potential projects within the next decade.
“This is all potential development,” he said. “All of these are just hypothetical. … I don’t think Pitt has the capacity to take on every project within the 10-year envelope, but we need the flexibility. In reality, I think we’re going to be looking at something less.”
