WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — A California University of Pennsylvania football player was arrested on Saturday after police said he caused a fight outside of a restaurant.
According to the university’s spokeswoman, Claudy Mathieu has been suspended from the team following the incident.
Police said the 20-year-old redshirt freshman was seen by an officer yelling at a crowd outside of a Subway restaurant on Third Street early Saturday morning.
According to court paperwork, an officer watched as Mathieu ran across the street and started hitting Marshkhal Ibrahim.
“It gives, especially prospective students and their parents, a really negative message about the school. If you’re a parent you wouldn’t want to send your child to a place where there is crime and violence,” said student Emily Nallin.
Mathieu is facing several charges including aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment. School officials said he will remains suspended from the team until the criminal investigation is complete.
