SOUTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Lots of growth is happening in South Fayette Township, but the size of one proposed development has raised concerns about its size and impact on the town’s school district.
The new residential and commercial development is being built at the site of the former Mayview State Hospital.
"They had a request to rezone the property and that was discussed at great length last year in 2015. And that was finally approved in late 2015, and now all through 2016, (the developer), Charter (Homes), has been going through the land development process,” South Fayette Township Manager Ryan Eggleston said.
The development process has brought about concerns over the number of students who could potentially live at Charter Homes’ Hastings development and enroll in the South Fayette Township School District.
Some worry the number could be overwhelming.
"I think Charter Homes, I mean obviously I don't want to speak for them, but our interactions from the township's end, all along they've been working in good faith in recognition of that,” Eggleston said.
A plan that Charter Homes presented to township commissioners last week showed about 50 fewer residential units than originally planned – down from about 620 to about 570 units.
“I think, frankly in talking with Charter, that that was in recognition of the concerns that the district raised as well as the township,” Eggleston said.
The construction has been split into several phases and isn't expected to be completed for another seven to 10 years.
