Deer rescued from icy lake in Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. — A deer fell into an icy lake in Scranton and crews rushed in to save it.

Rescuers put on cold water suits and made their way through the ice on Mountain Lake to get to the deer

Crews said it was a challenge getting to the animal, which was stuck in the middle of the lake, as temperatures were frigid in and out of the water.

“We came up here and, sure thing, there he is, right directly in the middle of the lake. So we started. We put on the cold water suit and basically had to pound our way through the ice to get to him,” Pvt. Bill Walsh of the Scranton fire department told WBRE.

After nearly an hour, the deer was pulled from the lake.

Rescuers said the animal seemed fine and ran into the woods.

“As far as I know, the deer looks like he’s going to be all right. He has a fighting chance now that he’s out of the water. A little wet, but he took off running into the woods,” said Sgt. Kevin Green of the Scranton police department.
