PITTSBURGH,None — A downtown Pittsburgh landmark is closing after 93 years -- the Honus Wagner Co. sporting goods shop.
Co-owner Harriet Shapiro said the store is closing because she and her husband, Murray, have no one who will take over the fourth-generation business.
Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Honus Wagner opened the Forbes Avenue store in 1918 and sold it to the Shapiro family 10 years later. At one time, the team supplied uniforms to the Pirates and regional semipro and high school teams and offered a full line of sporting goods.
In recent years, the store has sold mostly licensed team apparel and other sports-related clothing.
Shapiro said the store will close in the next six weeks after a going-out-of-business sale. She said the shop is not closing because of poor business or financial trouble.
