Driver Flees DUI Checkpoint, Crashes On Narrow Street In Oakland

PITTSBURGH,None — A man who tried to race through a DUI checkpoint on the Birmingham Bridge was caught when he crashed into a parked car in Oakland, police said.

The police pursuit began when the driver tried to avoid a DUI checkpoint on the Birmingham Bridge Friday night. In the end, several cars were damaged and the driver was arrested.

Police said Terrel Grant saw the checkpoint ahead and tried to make a break for it just before midnight. He ran over several orange cones and traffic signs. According to officials, police officers had to run to get out of his way.

The end of the chase was caught on surveillance video. The camera belongs to a resident on Mckee Place.

Kunal Patel said he heard the crash. "I was on the porch and then when I went in, I heard a huge bang. When I came back out, there was a minivan out there. This is a one way street and it was facing the other way," Patel said.

When Grant left the bridge, police said he almost ran into other cars on the road. After he crashed into the cars on Mckee Place, police showed up soon afterward, guns drawn.

Alyssay Rittenhouse said she saw the arrest. "There was a kid who was standing here and he was talking to us. He said he was walking by and he saw the crash. He was really glad he didn't get run into," Rittenhouse said.

Patel also said it's amazing no one was hurt. Mckee Place is home to many students living in apartments.

Grant is in the Allegeheny County Jail and he is being charged with aggravated and simple assault, among other charges.
