BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. — A Bridgeville business fired one employee after a derogatory comment was made to a woman breastfeeding her child.
Juliet Oleynick was breastfeeding her son, Oliver, at in the corner of the room at Flight Trampoline Park and was stopped by two male employees when she had finished.
"He said, ‘Hey, next time you do that you have to go up to the party room.’ I just looked and said, ‘You know it's illegal for you to tell me that?’" said Oleynick.
In Pennsylvania, it is illegal to tell a woman to cover up or move while breastfeeding in public.
Oleynick said that she was ready to let the incident go until another employee made a derogatory comment about children seeing her breasts.
Flight Trampoline Park said that the employee has been fired.
"I just felt down, I was shaking and so upset. I kind of felt bad for him almost too," said Oleynick.
The company called Oleynick to apologize for the incident and released the following statement on its Facebook page.
"This apology extends not only to the breastfeeding mom that was involved, but to her friends and family members, as we want our park to be inviting and welcoming to all individuals…In an effort to be proactive and better educate our staff, we have reached out the South Hills chapter of La Leche League International to plan a fundraiser with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the organization."
Oleynick is now being called an advocate for breastfeeding mothers by others.
"I never really considered myself an advocate. I have a baby, that's what I do. But it feels great to bring positive attention to it," said Oleynick.
