FREE: WPXI Finds Sites That Offer Items For Free

PITTSBURGH,None — Everyone's interested in free stuff, including free groceries at the supermarket or free food from a restaurant.

Channel 11 News has great details on some other things you can get for nothing.

Kyri Espy is a student at Duquesne University, and she and her friends are the queens of free.

"Groceries items like Campbell 's soup, razors, shampoo," said Espy. "That's more money in my pocket I can go spend on something else."

Getting something for nothing has never been easier.

Channel 11 found some of the best resources with the Web sites HeyItsFree.net, TotallyFreeStuff.com and CommonSenseWithMoney.com.

These sites work for you, by finding deals and posting them.

Channel 11 found coupons for free Hallmark cards, free coffee at Borders, and free detergent and free diapers.

Usually, all shoppers have to do is register, but the bigger the free item, the more work involved.

"I found with a lot of the bigger items, they tell you you can get for free (but) you have to fill out 30 pages worth of surveys, disclose personal information," said Espy.

Craigslist.com also has plenty of free items that people list, including clothes, furniture and even baby formula.

At MyKidsEatForFree.com, you find restaurants in the Pittsburgh area where kids eat for free.

Head over to VisitPittsburgh.com to find some fun free activities, including concerts and tours. At the site, you can even borrow a bike for free to explore local trails.

Consumers do need to be cautious, making sure free means there is no cost, no shipping fees and no handling fees.

"When consumers see the word 'free,' they are drawn to it," said Duquesne University business professor Audrey Guskey. "It really grabs people's attention. The bottom line is, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is."

Experts recommend setting up a separate e-mail address when you register on these sites and never share personal information like Social Security numbers or credit card or bank information.
