General faints onto podium at Pentagon briefing

PENTAGON — A tense moment at the Pentagon today during a press briefing on the Air Force's budget.

Major General James Martin Jr. was standing beside the podium when he slowly slumped forward.

Several people came to his aid after he appeared to faint.  Aides rushed to his side and helped the general sit.  After a few moments he was able to walk out on his own.

Word came later that General Martin is ill with the flu or a cold and that he will be fine.

Assistant Air Force Secretary Carolyn Gleason finished the briefing without him.
