Health Department Issues Consumer Alert On Chinese Restaurant In Verona

VERONA, Pa.,None — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert on a Chinese restaurant in Verona.

According to health department officials, Dragon Restaurant was cited for storing raw chicken on top of vegetables and for thawing food in standing water.

"That creates a pool of bacteria," said Steve Steingart of the Health Department. "There are many different ways to thaw correctly, and that really wasn't one of them."

The Health Department's report also said that food was cooled at unsafe temperatures. Inspectors said they found lo mein and dumplings sitting out at room temperature.

"The food would then sit in the danger zone and that could possibly lead to a food borne illness outbreak, so we like to have products cooled quickly and rapidly," Steingart said.

The restaurant was also cited for not having a certified manager. According to the report, the manager is expected to take a certification class later this month.

Inspectors said they will return to the restaurant in a few days. If the problems have been fixed, the alert will be lifted.
