New COVID-19 guidelines in Pa. have grocery stores even busier than normal ahead of Thanksgiving

PITTSBURGH — Grocery stores are packed with shoppers as we head toward Thanksgiving. With the statewide stay-at-home advisory, it’s even busier than normal right now.

So, will you be able to get what you need at the last minute?

Giant Eagle is seeing a large surge of shoppers right now, driving sales higher than normal. Store officials told Channel 11 the Thanksgiving holiday, combined with the stay-at-home order, is causing some panic buying once again.

“A lot of folks just want to make sure they have what they need for themselves and families before going into that stay-at-home or lockdown,” said a Giant Eagle spokesperson.

When it comes to product, Giant Eagle is assuring customers there is no need to hoard bulk items. The store has turkeys available, but it is harder to find smaller ones at the moment because of smaller gatherings this year.

Store officials said they are generally in a good position with most holiday items with the exception of a few things, such as frozen spinach for dips.

Giant Eagle is open until 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving just in case you need something.
