1 person injured in train-vs.-car crash in Washington Co.

ELCO, Pa. — Police said one person was injured Thursday evening after a train-vs.-vehicle crash in Elco.

The crash happened just before 8 p.m. at the Vesta Street railroad crossing.

Emergency Dispatchers said initial reports indicated that three people were injured. However, an officer at the scene said only one person was in the car hit by the train.

According to the officer, the driver of the car attempted to beat the train across the tracks and failed. The driver was pinned beneath the train, and crews had to cut him out of the car in order to rescue him.

Police said the man was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

There was no word on the victim’s name or the extent of his injuries.
