BUTLER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Pennsylvania American Water announced Wednesday it is constructing a new $1.1 million booster pump station in Butler Township to improve water pressure and fire protection for customers along Portman Road in neighboring Summit Township.
The project is designed to replace aging underground infrastructure with an updated above-ground system. Summit Township contributed approximately $85,000 toward the station upgrades to strengthen fire flow capabilities for local residents and businesses.
The above-ground booster station replaces an aging underground facility. It features primary and backup pumps, a dedicated fire flow pump and a backup power generator to improve service reliability and resiliency.
“This project replaces aging infrastructure with a more reliable system that better serves customers along Portman Road,” said Jake Gentile, director of operations for Pennsylvania American Water.
The station project builds on recent infrastructure work completed in the area. Water crews replaced 4,360 feet of two-inch water main with an eight-inch main and installed four fire hydrants along Portman Road.
“This project is an important investment in public safety and reliable service that will not only benefit the 20 residents and businesses along Portman Road but also expands our ability to offer fire protection for approximately 40 more residents in the surrounding area,” said David Barry, chairman of the Summit Township Board of Supervisors. “We appreciate Pennsylvania American Water’s partnership in improving fire protection for our community.”
The booster pump station project is expected to be in service in fall 2026.
