PLEASANT HILLS, Pa. — Three people were hospitalized Friday after being sickened by carbon dioxide at a Pleasant Hills Boston Market, officials said.
According to investigators, the carbon dioxide leaked from a soda machine at the Clairton Boulevard restaurant Friday morning. Carbon dioxide is a key ingredient in fountain soft drinks.

"Crews went downstairs; were able to shut off the tank. They received low oxygen levels down in the basement area. At that time, we began ventilation after the tank was shut off and brought oxygen levels back to normal conditions," said Chief Randy Porter, of the Pleasant Hills Fire Department.
Carbon dioxide, too much of which reduces the amount of oxygen in the air, can cause dizziness, headaches, and eye and skin burns.
The conditions of the people hospitalized, all of whom were employees, have not been released.
