Abandoned, leaning Washington home demolished by city

WASHINGTON, Pa. — After months of legal battles, a city of Washington abandoned home was demolished on Tuesday.

The home on Church Street was leaning on a home next door. Mayor Brenda Davis said she had no choice but to issue an emergency order to tear it down.

"Over time it just kept leaning and leaning. It has been against this property for over three years now," Davis said.

A man who lived at the home moved out about a year ago after it was condemned. Davis said he has refused to do anything with the home so she had no choice but to take matters into her own hands.

Neighbors said they are relieved.

"This is needed to be done for quite some time and I feel very sorry for the person next door that lives there because it has done some damage to them," said neighbor Sandy Gross.

The city paid $5,000 to tear down the house. A lien will be put against the homeowner.

Davis said this home is just one of many abandoned homes in the city that will be torn down in the next year.
