PITTSBURGH — The Aldi grocery stores chain announced Friday that one of its stores will be opening at 5200 Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood, following the closing of a Bottom Dollar grocery store.

“I’m definitely happy because it creates jobs and gives the people a nice place to do their food shopping,” said resident Elizabeth Anderson.

The Bottom Dollar in Garfield closed when Aldi purchased the rival chain last fall, leaving the area without a grocery store.

The Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation and families petitioned the company, organizing a rally and neighborhood walk last week.

“I think it’s tremendous Aldi is coming in. I think that the products are good, very well-priced and well-managed. It’ll be a great asset for the community,” said Richard Flanagan, with the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said the announcement is a great example of what happens when government leaders, businesses and neighbors “come together to work for the common good."

Peduto and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald personally met with Aldi officials to try to convince them to move to the Garfield neighborhood.

The grocery chain will now have three stores within the city limits.
