Esplanade first phase, including the Ferris wheel unanimously approved at URA meeting

PITTSBURGH — The board of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh voted unanimously on a measure to sell a 5.59-acre former steel mill site along the Ohio riverfront in the North Side neighborhood of Chateau to local group Millcraft Properties, to help kick off the development firm’s first phase of Esplanade, its $236 million dollar project.

According to the agenda for the URA board’s regularly scheduled December meeting on Thursday, the vote was for entering a contract to sell the collection of properties for $1.5 million dollars to make way for the large development.

Millcraft Properties shared new renderings of the Esplanade that show what the Riverfront would look like just north of the Rivers Casino.

It would include a marina, Ferris wheel, splash pad, restaurants, housing, a parking garage and green space.

“I think it would bring a lot of new employment and new opportunities for the people who live there. I think it’s wonderful. We haven’t had anything new developed here in years,” longtime Manchester resident Pamela Pryor told Channel 11.

Urban Redevelopment Group CEO Greg Flisram said, “We are excited to see this mixed-use project, which includes affordable housing, advance forward with the Manchester community in a way that seeks to reconnect the neighborhood to a revitalized riverfront.”
