Cause, manner of death determined after North Side woman's disappearance

PITTSBURGH — The medical examiner said Wednesday that a North Side woman who disappeared and was later found in the Ohio River committed suicide by drowning.

Harriet Smith, 69, went missing Friday, which was also her birthday. Her body was discovered Monday in the Ohio River near the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority.

Smith was last seen by her husband after she came home Friday morning from a night shift at Children's Hospital.

Her husband of 23 years, Vincent Smith, said he had been out looking for a birthday gift for her.

"I said, 'I'm leaving now. I'll see you later.' I kissed her and said I love her. She said, 'I love you too.'"

When he returned to their North Side home, she was gone, along with her purse and cellphone. But her entire paycheck that she had cashed was left behind, and a set of doors to their home was left unlocked.

When Harriet Smith didn't show up for work, Vincent Smith and his family knew something was wrong.

"I will always wonder why this happened," said Vincent Smith. "Where did she go? Who saw her?" I'm trying to be strong.  For this to happen, it's like to snatch my heart right out of my chest."
