PENN HILLS, Pa. — Four people were able to safely escape a house fire Tuesday morning in Penn Hills.
The blaze was first reported at a home on Orin Street about 5:30 a.m.
Chris Spencer, 18, told Channel 11 News that he woke up when he heard his family screaming hysterically and noticed the house was filled with smoke.
Spencer said he helped his mother and her fiancé to the roof, but he wasn’t able to get to his 12-year-old sister.
“My sister was on the roof that was over there. It’s not there anymore. She had to jump off,” Spencer said.
Spencer said his sister jumped into the waiting arms of a neighbor and was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital to be checked out. No other injuries were reported.
“It’s a shock. I didn’t expect this to happen,” Spencer said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family with food, clothing and shelter.
