Authorities say a candle caused a fire inside a dorm room on the campus of Robert Morris University Tuesday.
According to university relations officials, a student knocked the burning candle over, causing flames to damage the room just before 6 a.m.
Several other rooms inside Washington Hall were also damaged by smoke.
“As we understand, a candle in a student’s room was knocked over. The fire was contained to that room and was quickly extinguished,” said Jonathan Potts, of Robert Morris University.
Officials said most students are home for Thanksgiving break, however many athletes and international students remain on campus.
“We would rather it not happen at all, but we are just glad no one was injured and then it was quickly contained. Moon Township did a very good job,” Potts said.
Several students are displaced, though an exact number was not known.
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Channel 11's Dave Bondy reported that candles are not permitted on campus, according to the university's website.
Officials at Robert Morris aren’t saying if any disciplinary action will be taken against the students who had the candle in the room.
