CANONSBURG, Pa. — Businesses along a stretch of Pike Street in Canonsburg were bracing for more flooding Tuesday after heavy rain caused water to rush down the street and into several businesses last week.
Business owners said the flooding last Thursday happened within minutes, sending water into LC Beauty Lounge and Kay’s Beauty Bars.
“It was pretty bad,” said LC Beauty Lounge owner Lexi Coleman. “It did come into our salon. Our parking lots were flooded. Our neighbors got it really bad. I feel so bad for them.”
The flooding was so severe that business owners were seen trying to unclog sewers by hand as water moved through the area.
Tuesday’s rain brought back those concerns.
“Oh PTSD! We were so scared,” said Coleman, who still has fans drying her salon’s floor.
Canonsburg Public Works Director Brian Moody said the water is coming from McBurney Street, which runs through both Chartiers Township and Canonsburg.
Robinson Piping Cleaning was already scheduled to work in the area Tuesday to clean the pipes and attempt to insert a camera to determine more about the drainage problem.
Moody said the flooding issue has been ongoing for decades and is complicated by the amount of land above McBurney Street, water flowing down a hollow, undersized pipes and the involvement of two municipalities.
He said Tuesday’s rain provided an opportunity for engineers to observe how water moves through the area. Although the road came close to flooding, it did not reach the same level as last week.
Business owners said they are hopeful the work will eventually lead to a permanent solution.
“My husband was watching on his phone on the cameras all night last night,” Coleman said. “A lot of PTSD. We are traumatized.”
