WHITAKER, Pa. — A car slammed into a convenience store in Whitaker on Wednesday morning.
Police, firefighters and medics were called to the scene at Bob’s Autotorium on Route 837, right across the Rankin Bridge, shortly before 6 a.m.
Investigators believe the woman was driving southbound from the Rankin Bridge when she reportedly accelerated into the shop’s retaining wall and rocks and into the shop.
The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries, according to police.
Investigators say they will review surveillance video and interview the driver.
Channel 11 spoke with Melicia Chapman, who came to the shop as her wife was supposed to be at the shop working at the time of the crash. After repeated phone calls that went to voicemail, she said she was getting worried.
“I’m real concerned she’s not answering her phone or nothing. So I happen to come past to see if everything was OK, to see it look like this,” said Chapman.
The store owner said thankfully nobody was inside at the time. He did not want to speak with media but said state police would be reviewing his cameras.
He added he’s had close to 30 crashes over the years.
“I’ve been nervous every day because I know cars be flying across the bridge. You know what I’m saying? They don’t really stop. They just keep going,” said Chapman.
State police said their investigation is ongoing.
