Clarion U president talks about combining colleges into PennWest

New name for merged California, Clarion, and Edinboro universities announced New name for merged California, Clarion, and Edinboro universities announced

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson, the president of Clarion University that will join with California University of Pennsylvania and Edinboro University to become Pennsylvania Western University later this year, set out Thursday before a business audience to correct what she called misinformation about the pending merger.

The three universities beginning in July will be known as PennWest, with four campuses: Cal U, Edinboro, Clarion and a global campus online. And far from cutting out the heart of the existing campuses, Pehrsson said the change that is brought about by the move to PennWest is about the future and preparing students for prosperity.

“We did kind of build for an older model and now we need to repurpose buildings, we need to repurpose resources, we need to change the way we teach because students are learning in different ways,” Pehrsson said. “They will have more on-the-ground options and more education options as well.”
